Diving the Tuncurry

10 meter viz sounds pretty good for a dive in Sydney of late, but when I left my house this morning that is what I had on the F3 for the drive up to the Central Coast! Sydney and surrounds was blanketed in a thick layer of fog and there were places where I could hardly see the road. On the positive side, a thick fog usually means no wind (as that would blow it away), so maybe we would have a nice dive. After a bit of a stressful drive, I finally made it to Ettalong, parked (we beat the Scuba Shack divers to the wharf and got some of the few remaining unlimited parking spaces) and caught up...

BWACers on the Birchgrove Park

This weekend we thought we might try something different for a change, so we, (Arthur, Michael K, Paul Nillesen, Andy, President Charlie & I) packed our gear aboard the Barry D at an ungodly hour for a Saturday morning and set sail for the wreck of the SS Birchgrove Park. The ride to the dive site was a tad bumpy due to Andrew hitting every pot hole in sight. As per usual there was the continual volley of wit the minute we stepped from our cars. We encountered two other dive boats nearby this wreck today who suggested the viz was terrible! One dive boat even implied that they were going...

BWAC Adelaide Dive 2 – Sat 6 Aug 2011

I had a look at the forecast for this weekend and spoke to Graham and we decided it looked a good time to dive the Adelaide. I had a few friends (Matt Dalton & Greg Rose) that were interested in joining BWAC and waiting for the chance to dive the Adelaide. I spoke to them and they were keen. I booked the boat with Michael Foster and asked him if he knew of anyone else that may like to dive with us, Arthur and Ulrike agreed to come along and Mike Wilson is going to boat sit for us (Thanks Mike). I booked the mooring for 12:30pm as my son was playing rugby league in the morning. We got to...

BWAC Adelaide Dive 1 – Sat 6 Aug 2011

It was great to finally have a reasonable dive on our famous “Adelaide”. Loved by more every day especially the fish as per enclosed photo and by the divers checking out that famous one of a kind Bow. We had the 8.30 am mooring time and already upon arrival there were numerous dive boats around going about their buisness. The water was clear enough as per photos although a tad cool. Thanks to Mike Wilson boat sitting, we were able to have a good hour on the wreck and only exited when I got a good dose of the shivers. The wreck is going to take a while to explore and is great for...

Birchgrove Park

It’s Friday morning and I received a text from Michael Foster: You diving tomorrow? …might be a little dirty and not real warm. I can hardy wait After the conditions we’ve had over the last few weeks, I suspect Mike will be right. Anyway, the waverider buoys are all saying that the seas will be flat and the forecast is for no wind, so we better enjoy it while we can. Saturday morning see’s the usual suspects braving the early morning start – Mike Foster, Spiro, Arthur, Andrew & myself, with Doug acting as boat sitter (he has a cold), quickly load up the boat...

Trip Report from Kabaira Resort in Rabaul, PNG

Grant, Graham, Dean, John, Damo and I went to Kabaira Dive Resort in May 2011 for a week of diving in the warm and clear waters of PNG. We flew from Sydney through to Port Moresby then on to Kokopo Airport. Rain and Kabaira staff met us at the airport, the resort was about a hour drive. The next day was sunny and warm and it was great to get away from the cold and wet of winter for a few days. The first day we did a few wall drift dives (Horse Shoe reef and East Point). These were check out dives and I was a little disappointed with the lack of big fish, but the coral was great and the Viz...
